Ara Melkissian opens to 22,000 from early position and is met with a three-bet jam from Timothy Thorp in the cutoff for 188,000. Action folds back to Melkissian, who quickly calls.

“Oh No!” exclaims Thorp, concerned by the speed of the call.

“Fair fight”, says Thorp, when he sees his opponent’s holding.

Thorp looks to be heading for the exit after the Spade 9Diamond 9Spade 6 flop and Club 3 turn.

As the turn hits, Thorp is up out of his chair and preparing to exit, looking for the extra equity it will undoubtedly give him. “Barry Greenstein!” shouts Thorp as he prepared for the river, the American nickname for ace-queen, and sure enough the Diamond A hits on the river to give him the double-up.

Thorp celebrates enthusiastically as the river hits, saying “If you ask for it every time it happens some of the time”, as Melkissian’s face turns to ash.
